The Spring Term
theme for the Woodstock Group (our Sixth Form Scholars’
Society) was ‘The Meaning of Madness’.
Students analysed and debated issues related to
mental health.
The high-point of the term’s programme was the visit
of Dr Neel Burton, a psychiatrist and philosopher from
Oxford University who has also worked at the city’s
Warneford psychiatric hospital.
His book 'The Meaning of Madness' recently
won the British Medical Association Prize for Best Young
Author.
He spoke powerfully and engagingly about mental
depression, eliciting a particularly animated response
from the 100 Woodstock Group members who attended.
The Woodstock Group moves on in the summer term to
consider treatments of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, culminating in a performance of Benjamin
Britten’s opera of the play at Garsington Opera.
