The major sports for girls are Hockey, Netball, Tennis
and Rowing. In recent years, girl’s sport at St Edward’s
has flourished with the standard rising dramatically.
The U18 girl’s hockey team were national finalists in
2006 and 2007 and in 2007 St Edward’s were Oxfordshire
Hockey County champions at U14, U16 and U18 level. Our
U16 netball team are current county champions. A number
of girls have county, regional and national
representative honours in various sports.
Sport
in the 6th form is compulsory. Girls who played to a
good school representative standard are required to
continue with the major sport of the term. Those who do
not may opt to participate in the minor sport of the
term. A very few of the girls are able to take part in a
more leisure based approach to sport covering a range of
activities such as aerobics, badminton, health-related
exercise, swimming, tennis and yoga.
Those few
girls not competing in matches on a Saturday take part
in an Activities programme which involves community
service both school based and within the wider
community.
Girls in the shells and 4ths take
part in a second sport programme on a Tuesday around the
major sport of the term. This programme allows
pre-season preparation for the following term as well as
the opportunity to participate in a wider range of
sports and experience the benefits of a regular active
lifestyle.
