OSE Special Gaudy - Saturday 12 June 2010
This June we welcomed back OSE from two year groups,
1962 – 1966 and 1992 – 1996. Unfortunately, due
primarily to clashes with a number of OSE weddings, busy
social summer calendars and other events we didn’t have
the numbers at this event that we had hoped for.
However, this did not dampen the OSE spirit! Over 80
OSE, their guests, former and current MCR staff came
back to enjoy a special Chapel service, complete with a
rousing rendition of the School song. This was followed
by a mouth-watering three-course lunch in a marquee on
the quad. The President of the SES Society, Andrew
Cherry (B 1957 – 1960) warmly welcomed everyone, and the
Warden updated the guests on the recent goings-on in the
School, peppering his speech with some witty anecdotes.
The weather was wonderful and the majority people
were happy to potter down to the new Martyr’s Pavilion
to watch the School 2nd XI take on a strong Marlburian
side. Others took advantage of the opportunity to watch
the girls play tennis against Tudor Hall and a few
enjoyed the tours, willingly provided by some of our
“off-games” pupils.
All in all it was, to quote
former President of the Society, His Honour John Bishop,
“a very happy occasion” and one we hope to replicate
next June. This time, perhaps, with better numbers?
Please do alert your contemporaries about this wonderful
event. Gather a group together and form a table.
Husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends and children
are all welcome.

1997 – 1999)
A
Memorial Service
and Festival Cricket Match was held at St.
Edward’s on the 5th June 2010, in Remembrance and
Celebration of the life of David Drake-Brockman.
Following the David Drake-Brockman Memorial service in
the School Chapel a Festival Cricket Match took place on Upper
1, this was followed by a hog roast.
OSE Special Gaudy - Saturday 13 June 2009
On Saturday 13 June, the School warmly welcomed back
OSE who started before 1949 and between September 1972
to May 1977. Just over 150 OSE, their guests and
ex-common room members of staff came back to the School,
from far and wide and we were pleased to be blessed with
a beautifully sunny day.
The Gaudy followed the
traditional pattern of proceedings. OSE and their guests
gathered in the Quad before attending the Chapel service
at noon. It was a splendid service, with readings by the
Society President His Honour John Bishop and Reverend
Charlie Kerr, and a wonderfully evocative performance of
‘Cautate Domino’ by Olivia Davies and Rosalie Warner.
The service ended with the School Song.
The
marquee is normally erected on Upper One but, as the new
pavilion is being built on this site, we held the Gaudy
in the Quad, which proved a lovely location for our
drinks reception. This was followed by a delightful
summer luncheon. After a brief speech from the Warden
and the Society President, OSE, their families and
friends took advantage of the weather and watched the
1st XI cricket, the tennis tournament on the Astro pitch
or took tours of the School, the North Wall and the new
Science building.
A large and varied selection of
Rhubarb memorabilia was available to purchase and quite
a few OSE updated their wardrobe on this occasion.
The Collection which was taken at the end of the
Chapel Service for MWANA/Child Supplementary Feeding and
Educational Support charity, a partner charity to the
African Children’s Fund in Zimbabwe, which one of
teachers, Henry Chitsenga has helped to set up with his
local church. It aims to provide support to about 5000
orphans in the Manicaland Province, which has the
highest number of orphans, and is one of the poorest and
most politically-affected provinces in Zimbabwe. We
managed to collect over £524, an impressive amount.

Midlands Dinner - Friday 15 May 2009
The 30 guests at this year’s Midlands Dinner
were treated to a fantastic venue in the Edward Sheldon
Wine Merchants, Shipston-on-Stour, organised by new
regional representative James Synge (B 1964-69) and his
wife Linda. Guests came from all over the Midlands
region, as well as honorary Midlander Tony Combe (E
1946-50) who travels up from Dorset each year to attend
the OSE gathering.
During pre-dinner drinks,
guests had the option of a fascinating tour of the wine
cellars. It was very interesting to see the impact that
the previous summer’s flooding had had on the building,
and the high-water marks were still visible on the
walls.
A three-course dinner followed, and then
the Society President and Warden gave brief speeches. It
was a very successful first event for James Synge, and
another example of the warm and friendly atmosphere
created by regional dinners. James is now making plans
for another exciting venue for 2010. Watch this space!
OSE Tea Tent Henley Royal Regatta -
Friday 3 July 2009
On the Friday 3
July, OSE Hon. Sec. Charlie Baggs hosted the annual OSE
Henley Regatta Tea Party, aided capably by Phillipa
Minty and Rebecca Ting. The event saw several sets of
Rhubarb mingling with members of the 2009 1st VIII over
drinks and a cream tea, and was a delightful afternoon
for all present.
The date for the next event is
Friday 2nd July 2010, again during the tea break in the
Cricket Club Car Park. Do put it in your diary now - we
would love to see you!
First Robert
Lancaster Charity Shoot goes off with a bang!
The first Robert Lancaster clay pigeon shoot, in aid
of CRY, went with a bang and has this year raised
£164,000. The Robert Lancaster Charity Fund has now
raised a total of £185,000 since the start of 2008.
The shoot, at Bisley Shooting Ground, was a complete
sell out and attracted some of the shooting world's
leading shots and London’s top business people. The
shoot was made up of 10 stands 2 pool shoots and a team
flush.
Tim Charnley took the individual honors,
while teams from Bovale Ltd, AAC Capital Partners and
SSL International took 1st, 2nd and 3rd team prizes. The
pool shoot was won by Betton Cambidge part of the Long
Mountain Shoot team.
A total of 100 shooters
took part making up 25 teams ranging from first time
novice shooters to highly experienced shooters. The
shoot was followed by lunch and auction with the most
popular prizes including your weight in galaxy
chocolate, donated by Mars, a Jonathan Palmer track day,
donated by Cadbury, Penfold wines and a box at the O2 to
see Tina Turner live, donated by Gallaher.
A team
of 4 from St Edward’s, where Robert Lancaster was a
pupil (G 1998-2003), attended and all thoroughly enjoyed
the day. Their shooting master explained they were used
to shooting much simpler targets but the boys enjoyed
the challenge of the harder stands. There were
instructors on hand to help with the more unusual shots
and the boys hopefully all learnt something from them!
Every week 8 “apparently” fit and healthy young
people die in the UK from undiagnosed heart conditions.
Robert Lancaster died aged just 21 with no warning
whilst on a ski holiday with his parents. The Robert
Lancaster Charity Fund was set up in 2008 to raise money
for research into such heart conditions through the
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

2004 Leavers Event - Friday
12 June 2009
It was a great pleasure
to welcome back in June about 50 OSE who left the School
in 2004. They came for a reunion and also to help advise
our current Lower Sixth on university matters and
employment ideas. It was genuinely extraordinary to hear
how much these young OSE had achieved in the last five
years: everything from embarking on doctorates in
American literature to running pubs, writing speeches
for the Conservative Party and full-time Hip-Hop
teaching in Sussex (after completing an English degree,
of course!) The evening was a mix of business and
pleasure, with serious messages from the OSE reaching
our Lower Sixth about the hard choices and hard work
ahead of them – they take this sort of advice much
better from those who are still going through the
process than they might from those of us whose
experience dates back to the twentieth century!
Many thanks to all who came and gave generously of
their time. Would the 2005 leavers kindly mark Friday 18
June 2010 6 – 10 pm in their diaries? We’ll write to you
nearer the time with further details and hope as many of
you as possible will be able to join us.

OSE Special Gaudy - Saturday
12 September 2009
On Saturday 12th
September, the School warmly welcomed back OSE who
started between September 1967 & May 1972 and between
September 1987 & May 1992. Guests were welcomed in the
Quad by the OSE Honorary Secretary, Charlie Baggs and
the Secretary to the OSE, Phillipa Minty before
attending the Chapel service at midday.
It was
another lovely service with readings by the Society
President, His Honour John Bishop and Reverend Charlie
Kerr, a beautifully sung anthem by the Chamber Choir and
the School Song. This was followed by a lunch in a
marquee sited between the old and new pavilions.
After lunch and an uplifting speech from the Warden
everyone was invited to watch the rugby match against
Bloxham on Upper One and the hockey against Wellington
on the Astro pitches. Tours were then given of the North
Wall theatre and the New Science Building.
It is
always wonderful to see OSE and their families alongside
current and ex-staff meeting each other for the first
time in years and catching up on old times. The Special
Gaudies always seem to have a very unique and memorable
atmosphere, with many OSEs not having returned to the
School in quite some years, and this one was no
exception.
Cornish and South West
Regional Lunch - 27 March 2009
The
Cornwall (SouthWest) Spring Luncheon took place on
Friday 27th March 2009, once again at The Crown Inn,
Lanlivery.
Eighteen OSE attended and we were
very pleased to welcome, for the first time, Hugh
Woodcock (G 1939 – 1943) and Nigel Aston (D 1961 – 1964)
OSE London Drinks Party -
Thursday 1 October 2009
The
President of the OSE, His Honour John Bishop, The
Honorary Secretary, Charlie Baggs, the OSE office and
members of the Committee welcomed London-based OSE to an
informal drinks party at the London Rowing Club, Putney
on Thursday 1 October 2009. Drinks and canapés were
served to over 60 OSE, and many stayed in to the small
hours despite the fact it was a School night!
It was a lovely opportunity to meet up with old
friends and meet new acquaintances. It is hoped that
this will be one of many successful London Drinks Events
for the OSE and School community, and the OSE Office are
very grateful to former President of the OSE, Chris
Sprague for organising the venue.
