We are now embarking on one of the most exciting
and ambitious phases in our history to enhance our
facilities and to reinforce the spirit of inclusivity
that underpins the School’s ethos.
COMPLETED PROJECTS
Over the last few
years we have invested significant sums in improving the
School’s infrastructure. These enhancements have been
financed by careful management of our income, assisted
by the continuing generosity of our benefactors.
The North Wall Arts Centre is an
inspirational new building dedicated to the provision of
leading edge teaching and learning facilities. It will
also provide an array of cultural events, educational
opportunities and world-class performances for the
people of Oxford and beyond. As well as providing a 200
seat theatre, the North Wall also accommodates an
art/exhibition gallery, a drama studio and a dance
studio. The North Wall’s raison d’etre is to nurture new
talent, to inspire young people to participate in the
arts, and to break down perceived barriers to making a
career in the arts industry. An annual festival in the
summer months celebrates music, theatre and film and
showcases new talent, hosts concerts with world-renowned
performers and allows people to get close to British
artistic pioneers. Cost: £4.1m
A new
Science building was made possible thanks to a
substantial anonymous benefaction and is transforming
the teaching and learning of Biology and Sports Science
at the School. Science is already a very popular subject
at St Edward’s with Biology being the second most
popular A-level subject and Physics in the top five.
Formally opened in March 2009 by Baroness Ruth Deech,
the new building accommodates six Biology laboratories
and two Sports Studies classrooms and is a flagship in
sustainable design, setting new standards in school
buildings. Cost: £4.0m
The Martyrs
Pavilion is the School’s latest development,
and has been funded by the kind generosity of OSE.
Designed by visionary architect John Pawson, it will
provide the School with an outstanding modern pavilion
with all the essential features of a traditional one.
The building is eye catching, and affords a wonderful
elevated view of the Square and the School beyond. The
Long Room will also act as an excellent venue for
events, seating 64 people for meals and many more for
receptions. The building was opened by Lord Sandberg of
Passfield (OSE) in September 2009. Cost: £0.85m
OUR NEEDS NOW
Despite the
efficiency of the School’s administrative and financial
systems, and of its purchasing, the surplus on fees is
insufficient to fund our ambitious and essential
development plans. For the next round of enhancement we
are inviting our friends and supporters to continue the
tradition of benefaction that has put St Edward’s where
it is today.

Bursary and Scholarship Fund
£15m
Like most independent schools, St Edward’s
offers scholarships topped up by bursaries as a key
means of attracting and encouraging bright and talented
pupils from a wide variety of backgrounds. St Edward’s
is a school that flourishes on a spirit of inclusivity
and has thrived on a broad social intake. However,
the School does not have the benefit of a substantial
endowment and though we commit around 5% of our yearly
income to bursaries, this allows only a limited number
of scholarships and fee subsidies to support children
from families unable to afford full fees. Building a
strong Bursary Fund is therefore essential to allow us
to continue to extend the undisputed academic,
co-curricular and pastoral benefits that the School has
to offer to a wide range of children.
