Activities at St Edward's: |
|
The Activity programmes at St Edward’s are designed to
offer pupils the opportunity to experience new things
and develop skills and interests beyond their main games
commitments.
The entire range of activities
offered at St Edward’s is continually developing along
with the demands and needs of students and also to
ensure the best utilisation the great range of talents
within the school’s staff.
Our commitment to a
wide-ranging set of interests is demonstrated by the
fact that our activity programmes are compulsory for the
lower school and in many cases the activities are open
to sixth form students as well who will continue their
interests throughout their school career:
The
Shells Circus Scheme is designed to
offer opportunities for our first-year students to try
new sports and activities and is also introduces and
prepares them for major sports and cultural activities
that take place at various times of the year. A
series of training sessions in the Summer term prepares
students for the major Outdoor Pursuits trip to
Snowdonia after the Exeat and at various other times of
the year introductions to sports like rowing that many
will not have experienced sit alongside sessions at the
local climbing wall and nature walks into the local
area. Some music and PSHE sessions are also
incorporated into Shells Circus and taster sessions in
Fencing, Judo, Golf and Fitness Training in the Gym are
also offered. Shells Circus is a compulsory
programme for all Shells on Monday and Wednesdays and
the programme of taster sessions leads into a final
phase where individuals can choose to extend themselves
in one particular area during the latter part of the
Summer term.
In the Fourth Form
all students take part in the Combined Cadet Force on
Monday afternoons and choose to participate in at least
one other activity for a minimum of half-termly blocks
on Wednesdays. In the Fifth form the CCF is optional but
many stay on for extended training and are central to
the training of younger cadets. In this year group
students must involve themselves for a minimum of once a
week in CCF or one of the many other activities on
offer. All St Edward’s pupils are expected to take part
in the CCF but a non-military option is available for
those who specifically require it.
The
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is extremely
strong at St Edward’s with large numbers of qualified
and experienced staff supporting Silver and Gold Awards.
St Edward’s is a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme
Operating Authority and more than thirty Lower Sixth
formers take part in the Gold Award Expeditions each
year.
The CCF, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Scheme and our Community Service programme are all
thriving extracurricular activities at St Edward's,
teaching invaluable life skills and providing
unforgettable experiences of self-discovery and
adventure. For full details of all these activities
please follow the links to other parts of the site.
