We aim to enable all our pupils to make the most of their
academic abilities. Through excellent teaching and a positive
approach to learning we encourage our pupils to aim as
high as possible, to enjoy their studies and to do well
in examinations. There are five year groups known in ascending
order, as Shell, Fourth form, Fifth form, Lower Sixth
and Upper Sixth. The 'Shell' year is a foundation year
in which pupils study a wide range of subjects before
making choices for the Fourth and Fifth forms. Most pupils
take 9 subjects for GCSE ( including a compulsory core
of Mathematics, English, Double Award Science, and a modern
foreign language, which may be French, German, or Spanish
). In the sixth form we offer both A level and the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Both courses of study
are examined in the summer of the Upper Sixth year.
The
Sixth
Form Course guide and the GCSE
Course Guide can be downloaded from here as pdf files.
We admit around 20-30 pupils to the Sixth Form each
year.
Scholarships are awarded throughout the School more
In the Shell year, pupils' work and progress is carefully
monitored by Housemasters and Housemistresses, who take
special care to see that pupils settle in to all aspects
of the life of the school. In the remaining four years
each pupil has an academic tutor, who is also a tutor
in the pupil's house, who helps him or her to develop
good work habits and who monitors the work and progress
of tutees. Each tutorial group meets weekly and tutors
may arrange individual consultations as necessary.
Nearly all of our sixth form pupils proceed to higher
education, going on to a wide variety of institutions
and courses.
A number of our students go on to
Oxbridge,
Harvard and Yale each year.
